Many Helen of Troy have graced Foothill, but only one Teresa of Troy…and now she is retiring. After 37 years of loyal, dedicated service, Teresa Hutson has decided to start her well-deserved retirement this December.
It is impossible to describe her numerous contributions and impact upon students, faculty, Hall of Fame, and the Trojan Nation.
She first arrived at Foothill in 1969 as a young, shy freshman named Teresa Calaustro. She leaves in 2016 after having served as a teacher, coach and Activity Director. Teresa has coached girls golf as well as varsity and frosh volleyball. Thus, it was only fitting the frosh volleyball team would send her and co-coach Connie Preston out in style this year, by going unbeaten and becoming league champions!
No one has ever been able define or write a complete job description of Teresa’s role as activity director. It entails handling everything from rallies, formals, elections, Homecoming, posters, DVDs, decorating, and any other event that might be deemed “a student activity”. Her small office is a daily beehive of activity with students doing a myriad of projects and assignments, which seem to come under the title of “choreographed chaos”. Conductor Hutson can somehow manage all of this with uncanny poise while also multi-tasking on her phone and computer. Her ability to manage stress and deadlines is amazing, as she is also unknowingly seen as a role model, counselor, parental figure, and inspirational leader to so many.
Teresa’s retirement event was held at the 1933 Bar & Grill and was attended by those from all walks of life. While the big screen TVs documented her life and career in photos, hundreds of well-wishers also enjoyed dining, drinks and dancing, and the opportunity to share a card, gift, or memory with Teresa.
Teresa will continue to have a full, active life in retirement. Being married to legendary, retired basketball coach Mark Hutson, and having son Justin as an assistant basketball coach at San Diego State, will ensure that many of Teresa’s days will still be spent in some gym. Mark and Teresa are also avid golfers who expect to coordinate travel plans around some of the more prominent golf courses in America. But, with daughter Lindsey and four grandchildren, Teresa will remain anchored to Bakersfield so she can continue to share in their lives and attend their athletic and activity events.
And before you start to shed tears and bemoan the void she will leave, may I give you part of Teresa’s retirement speech, (which is the best I have ever heard)… “I am a Trojan for life, and still plan to assist Foothill and the Hall of Fame in the future!” What a comfort and blessing to know Teresa will still:
- Assist and direct the Foothill students in decorating future Hall of Fame and Foothill activities.
- Continue to help in the production of DVDs for new Hall of Fame Inductees, as well as fill and decorate the Treasure Chest.
- Assist Pat Carlotti’s Archive class in doing interviews, filing, and documenting and storing photos, clippings and memorabilia.
We wish Teresa well in retirement, but are comforted in knowing she will still give her valuable expertise and insight to future Foothill endeavors.
Thank you, Teresa, for being a beacon of inspiration, and showing us the highest standard of what a True Loyal Trojan represents. Congratulations on a job well done!
